EIGHT VISITORS IN MATCH PLAY FOR OPEN TITLE

WOMEN’S GOLF

Eight of the 16 players who qualified yesterday for match play in the P.B. ladies’ open golf title tournament are visitors for the fixture, and interest attaches to the fortunes of leading district players against some outstanding women golfers of the North Island. Mrs. Robb, at the head of the list, did a gross 98 in the morning round, but improved substantially in the afternoon, doing the best gross with 84 for an aggregate of 173. Mrs. O’Connor also registered a gross 173, with 87 in the morning and 86 in the afternoon. These two players were three strokes ahead of Mesdames Tippett and Fallwell. The list of qualifiers with their aggregate scores is as under:—

Iri a medal round played in conjunction with the championships, Miss S. Pritchard. 92-17-75, was the winner on the count-back in the A Division from Mrs. L. Chitty, 90-15-75, followed by Mrs.. H. Fall well, 97-12-75, Mrs. P Sherratt, 91-16-75, and Mrs.. E. P. Brown, 92-17-75. The best net score in the B Grade was obtained by Miss K. Beale, Te Puia, 101-30-71, and Mrs. J. Holdsworth, 92-19-73. was second.

A teams' match in conjunction with the afternoon round was won by a Wairoa team comprising R. Graham, A. E. Smith and P. Baird, with a combined net score of 235. Weather conditions were most inauspicious for the opening 'of the tournament, and much disappointment was caused by the withdrawal of a Hawke’s Bay contingent, owing to disruption of rail traffic on Tuesday.

The draw for the first round of match play in the championship tournament, scheduled for this morning, was as under:—Mrs. R. G. Robb v. Mrs. H. Lunken, Mrs. E. R. Brown v. Mrs. A. E. Smith; Mrs. H. Fallwell v. Mrs. M. Carter; Mrs. P. Sherratt v. Mrs. P. Baird; Mrs. L. Chitty v. Mrs. S. Bennett; Mrs. G. Tippett v. Mrs. H. G. Kemp; Mrs. J. Holdsworth v. Miss S. Pritchard; Mrs. R. Fenwick v. Mrs. C. F. O'Connor.
