U.S. Service Chiefs’ “Grand Start” On European Defence

(11.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON. Aug. 9. The United States Joint Chiefs of Staff returned here today ready to give Congress the benefit of their 10day conferences in Europe with the military chiefs of the Atlantic Pact countries, General Omar Bradley, Army, General Hoyt Vandenberg, Air Force, and Admiral Louis Denfield, Navy, arrived aboard President Truman's plane Independence. They will appear before the Senate Armed Forces Committee tomorrow. General Bradley described the European talks as “a grand start towards organising unity and collective security under the Atlantic Pact.” He said there had been a frank exchange of views but no decisions had been reached. He hoped the discussions would shorten the conferences necessary to organise under the pact.
