LAST N.Z. SOLDIER RETURNS FROM JAPAN
(P.A.) WELLINGTON. June 14. The last New Zealand soldier from Japan, Private W. O. Simpson, Auckland, returned today by the Monowai from Sydney and was given an “Army reception.” He was placed under arrest by a sergeant-major and corporal. Private Simpson told pressmen that on November 23 when his draft of J Force was about to leave for New Zealand he was so busy saying good-bye to his friends that he missed the embarkation train, remaining a lone Kiwi in the East. The best thing he could do, he said, was to surrender himself to the Americans and he remained with them for three months. Private Simpson, who is 39 years of age, said he was born in Fiji and had lived most of his life in New Zealand.
