Gisborne Highland Pipe Band Launches Uniform Fund Appeal

The following letter has been received from the president of the Gisborne Highland Pipe Band, Mr. H. D. Ohrisp:— “Of all the appeals to which human beings respond few are as powerful as that of national feeling, this sentiment being the very basis of our life. All human activities, aspirations and emotions contribute to build up a great nation. “The sentiment of kinship to the Motherland and our glorious history recalling the English and Scottish regiments and English and Scottish tunes in this far-flung outpost is very, real and strong. May it ever endure and we pledge ourselves to hold fast to our traditions and perpetuate through such associations as Highland pipe bands this call to our loyalties. , “The Gisborne Highland Pipe Band was formed some 24 years ago as an incorporated society and is affiliated to the New Zealand Highland Pipe Bands Association. It has during that time performed at many public functions, helping all worthy causes and brightening our town and it will continue to do

“By its own activities and ably assisted by warm-hearted supporters to whom our thanks have been accorded, it has raised over £IOOO to equip itself. It requires a further sum of between C4OO and £SOO to transform it from the "white shirts and grey slacks” to the full Highland uniform worthy of the town. . , , . .. . "A special campaign to achieve this objective has been launched and has received the wholehearted support of the business community through its local Chamber of Commerce. It is believed that there are many folk in our district who would willingly respond to this cause once they knew of the need. The band in its appeal quotes the words of the greatest of Englishmen: ‘Give us the tools and we will finish the job. "All contributions will be gratefully received either by the Gisborne Heiaid or the secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, Gisborne." Donations received to date arc:—
