WOMEN’S HOCKEY ON WHANGAPARAOA GROUND
(Herald Correspondent.) The football ground at Whangaparaoa was the scene of three women’s hockey games when teams from Omaio, Rau--1 kokore. Whangaparaoa and Te Araroa met under tournament conditions. Tainui and Tikirau, both local teams, met for the first time and, as many players in the comparatively newlyformed Tikirau team had before played for Tainui. the oldest district club, interest was keen. The result, a draw, was a fair indication of the merits in a bright game. Mrs. J. Te Moana scored for Tikirau and her daughter Betty scored for Tainui. The umpires were Messrs S. Waititi and D. Turei. Some young players showed quick adaptation when Kaikaana (Raukokore) met Kiritapu (Omaio) in a slower, but nevertheless exciting encounter which ended in a draw—no score. The umpires were unchanged. In the main match Tikirau (Whangaparaoa) defeated Awatere (Te Araroa), three-nil. Tikirau kept action in the Awatere half for most of the match and showed more finish. Goals were scored by Ruwheri (two) and J. Te Moana. The winners showed more cohesion. The wingers, K. Thain and Topi,, outclassed their opposite numbers and figured in the movements that culminated in scores. M. Walker or R. Bristowe were sound on defence. S. Huriwai was the outstanding forward, but her solo thrusts for Awatere lacked support. The umpires were Messrs. W. J. Walker and D. Turei.
