Badminton Tourney Draws Many Entries
The large number of entries received for the Gisborne Badminton Club’s handicap Yankee tournament on Monday night bore witness to tne increasing popularity of the game in Gisborne. With a total of 80 entries, play was divided into four sections, the many new members who were playing their first matches setting a difficult tasK for the handicapper. Some new players were a little unsettled at the beginning of play, but they soon settled down anti enjoyed their games. Outstanding players who narrowly missed victory in Section 1 were Mrs. M. Bruce and K. Rosie, and Miss b. Cox and P. Singer, each pair having three wins and one loss. In Section 2 Mrs. Caie and F. Sexton won three games and lost one, and a similar score in Section .8 was registered by Miss Renner and B. Knox, and Miss Evans and I. Crafts. In Section 4 Mrs. G. Knox and R. Sloan ,and Miss O. Allen and A. B. King each won three games and lost one. The winners of the various sections were: — Section 1: —Miss M. Ncilson and C. Fraser, four wins. Section 2:—Miss E. Poulgrain and M. Alexander, four wins. Section 3:—Mrs. R. Sloan and F. Capes, four wins. Section 4:—Mrs. Neilson and A. Brown, four wins.
