“Local Government In N.Z. On Verge Of Break-Down!”
(P.A.) DUNEDIN. June 15. "Local government in New Zealand is on (lie verge of a break down. It is becoming State-controlled and (he enterprise which made it great is being crushed.” said the Mayor, Sir Donald Cameron at a civic reception tendered last evening to delegates from all parts of (he Dominion lo the New Zealand Counties’ Association conference. "The work of city councils, borough councils and county councils is taken for granted, continues Sir Donald. "Councils perform a most useful service and should receive more consideration from the Government.
(l’.A.)
“Everywhere we are hampered by restrictions. What we need today—and I represent no political party—is more freedom in local-body management. “Local government is at present at the crossroads. We have reached a critical stage,” Sir Donald concluded. It is close to the people and is democracy's truest expression, but greater income and other facilities must be given to it or the death knell of democracy will be sounded and commissions and similar forms of nnn-elccted government will take its place.”
