Miners To Discuss National Strike
SYDNEY, June 13
Neither the president of the Miners’ Federation. Mr. I. Williams, nor the secretary, Mr. G. W. Grant, accepted an invitation to comment on Mr. Chifley’s charge of “base ingratitude.” The Miners’ Central Council has decided to call stop-work meetings throughout Australia this week to discuss a general strike beginning on June 27. As a result of this move, the Coal Industry Tribunal, Mr. F. H. Gallagher, has announced that he will not make the draft award on lcng-service leave tor miners which was expected tomorrow.
The miners’ application .for longservice leave amounting to 26 weeks on full pay after employment for 20 years in the industry was referred to Mr, Gallagher after negotiations between the miners, the owners and the Joint Coal Board on the miners’ claims for a 35-hour week and a wage increase of 30/- weekly. The coal owners have followed the miners’ threat with an application to Mr. Gallagher for the banning of all strikes and stoppages in the industiw for three months under a penalty of £IOO fine or six months' imprisonment.
