REPEATED BOOKMAKING OFFENCE RESULTS IN THREE MONTHS’ GAOL

(P.A.) _ INVERCARGILL, May 24. Convicted on a charge of carrying on business as a bookmaker, John Meyer Ford, aged 59, married, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment by Mr. W. A. Harlow, S.M., yesterday. In imposing the sentence the magistrate remarked'that Ford had thrice previoulsy been convicted of betting offences, on one occasion being fined £SOO. The duty of the court was to penalise a defendant in a way which should act as a deterrent to him and others similarly disposed. Detective-Sergeant A. W. McDougall said, the records showed that Ford was orobably one of the biggest bookmakers in the South Island, if not in New Zealand.
