ESCAPES BY PRISONER AND MENTAL PATIENTS

AUCKLAND, May 19
A prisoner who. had appeared in the Hamilton Magistrate's Court on Tuesday and was waiting .to be escorted to Hastings, escaped from a cell in the Hamilton police station last night. He was Jack Ormond Harland, aged 21. who had pleaded guilty to a charge of shop-breaking and one of theft. He had been committed to the Supreme Court at Auckland for sentence, but was to be taken to Hastings today to answer a charge there.
Harland made his escape while the constable was attending to another prisoner just after 7 p.m. He dashed through an open door and disappeared into thick fog A search was started immediately but the. man had not been found at a late hour.
Two inmates of the mental hospital at Avondale also escaped last night. One was a Maori, aged 40 years. Both men were described by the police as not being dangerous.
They were caught by the police at 11 o’clock today. They were walking toward North Auckland, where they formerly lived, and were caught at Huapai, 23 miles from Auckland.
