SWING TO THE WEST IN BERLIN
(9 a.m.)
BERLIN, May 19.
Figures for the Soviet sector of Berlin show that of the 947,313 persons entitled to vote in elections 864,456 went to the polls, representing 91.3 per cent.
Valid votes were 768,984 and of these 446,662, or 58.1 per cent., voted “yes” and 322,322, or 41.9 per cent.,“no.” The Times correspondent in Berlin says the electors were called on to vote not only for the candidates but also whether they were in favour of such aims as a united Germany and a just peace. All Germans would in normal conditions vote “yes.” That so many voted “no” underlies the rot which has set in and the swing to the western democracies which has begun.
