FREE-FOR-ALL JIU-JITSU IN TOKYO DIET
(N.Z.P.A.—Reuter—Copyright.)
(11 a.m.) TOKYO, May 19. Angry Communist and Democratic Liberal members today clashed in what the news agency Kyodo describes as one of the biggest brawls in the history of the National Diet.
Judo-trained members struggled on the floor of the House for nearly a quarter of an hour before the Speaker was able to break up the fight and call a recess. Tempers had earlier been strained while questions were asked about why the Government originally stated that a National Taxation Board was being established to confirm with the “demand” of the Supreme Command, Allied Powers. The Communist, Mr. Toshio Tachibana, during the exchange, approached a Democratic Liberal member on another matter.
The Democratic Liberals jostled Mr. Tachibana, thinking he was threatening violence.
Another Communist slapped a Democratic Liberal member’s face and a free-for-all developed. Right-wing Democratic Liberals who are with the Government party, outnumber the Communists by about eight to one.
