REVENUE £35,000,000 ABOVE ESTIMATE

(9 a.m.) CANBERRA, May 19. The Prime Minister, Mr. J. B. Chifley, disclosed in the House of Representatives that the Commonwealth’s revenue was likely to exceed his Budget estimate by about £35,000,000, and that expenditure would probably exceed the Budget estimate by about £14,000,000. Improvements in the revenue were due principally to income tax and social service contributions, Customs cinci excise. Mr. Chifley told the Federal Parliamentary Labour Party that he thought the Commonwealth’s financial surplus on June 30 might be about £4,000,000. The Commonwealth Treasury’s estimates varied between £3,000,000 and £8,000,000.
