SCHEME TO DEVELOP BIG TAUPO AREA FOR MAORI FARMERS
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 19. About 100,000 of 500,000 acres of undeveloped land in the Taupo area are to be brought into production for Maori farmers by the Department of Maori AfTairs. It is hoped to develop the land at the rate of 10,000 acres yearly—sufficient to settle either 40 dairy farmers or 20 sheep- fanners. It has been suggested that some form of training scheme may be- started to assist prospective farmers. Suitable timber is stated to be in the area for housing purposes. The scheme was recently discussed by the under-secretary to the Department of Maori Affairs, Mr. T. TRopiha, with members of the Tuwhnretoa tribe at Waihi Pa. Tokaanu.
