VEHICLES PARKED ON GISBORNE STREETS AT NIGHT ARE DANGER
THE practice of vehicles being parked all night on the sides of
streets in the borough was referred to in a 'letter from the Gisborne advisory committee of the Automobile Association (Auckland) received at last night’s meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council.
The town clerk, Mr. W. M. Jenkins, pointed out tlmt'under the borough bylaws a vehicle parked on the road-side must have its lights dimmed or be within 150 ft. of artificial street lighting. The State housing block was one of the worst offenders, but he now understood that car-owners were ivblc to erect garages on their properties. He understood the chief complaint was of the parking of large trucks in Hirini street, said Mr. F. Tolerton. The parking of vehicles at night outside St. Helen’s Home in Childers road also left much to be desired.
‘The practice of parking cars all night on borough streets is dangerous, said the Mayor, Mr. N. H. Bull. “It is difficult to obtain garages, but carowners should observe the by-laws, or there will be a serious accident." The advisory committee also drew attention to the laxity on the part of motorists and cyclists in giving direction signals. On the motion of Mr. Bull, the matters were referred to the traffic inspector, Mr. T. G. Niwcll.
