DRIVER ALLEGED TO HAVE CAUSED DEATH OF YOUTH OF FIFTEEN

HAMILTON, May 16.

Leo William Attwood Meagher, aged 38. a tunneller and miner, of Mangakino. appeared before Mr. M. M. Shaw and Mr. E, A. Butt, justices of the peace, in the Hamilton court today and was remanded on charges of being found in a state of intoxication while in charge of a car in Frankton on Saturday and that, while in a state of intoxication, he was in charge of a car at Horotiu and by an act or omission in relation thereto caused the death of Cameron William Harte.

Senior-Sergeant R. J. Sutherland, in asking for a remand until Thursday, said that there would be further charges preferred. The charges followed the arrest of Meagher on Saturday night after a car answering the description of the one ’he was driving knocked Cameron William Harte, aged 15 years, from his bicycle on the Great South road at 7.30 p.m. on Saturday night. Harte and another youth, Bruce McPherson were cycling to Hamilton when the car overlook them and struck Harte, but did not stop. McPherson supplied a description of the car to the police.
