STH. KOREA WANTS DEFENCE PACT
(10 a.m.) SEOUL, May 16. The President, Dr. Syngman Rhee, today called for a Pacific defence pact similar to the North Atlantic defence alliance to resist the “menace of the Communist Powers.” Dr. Rhee suggested, alternatively, that the United States should publicly pledge herself to defend a “reunited, democratic, independent Korea.” He added that South Korea would be able to maintain internal peace even if the United States token security force was withdrawn tomorrow. She was prepared to defend herself against aggression. “However, if attacked by a major foreign Power, we shall need more than moral help,” he added.
