MATCHES AT FOUR A 1 D

The recent scarcity of matches has not been confined solely to Gisborne and travellers in other parts of the Dominion have at times been sorely pressed for a match. The highlight of a search in Napier last week by a Gisborne visitor was the offer in one tobacconist’s shop of four matches for Id. Almost desperate after blank refusals by other shopkeepers approached for matches, the visitor took three-penny worth of matches wrapped up in a piece of paper. It was not until a few minutes later that he discovered they were safety matches—and he had no box on which to strike them.
