RERE BEAT ’KURI IN NGATAPA RUGBY SERIES
The only game in the Ngatapa Rugby Sub-union competition on Saturday was the match in which Rere defeated Waerenga-o-kuri, 14-three. Tahunga were unable to meet Patutahi owing to flooding having blocked the roads.
’Kuri kicked off and carried play to the Rere goal line- Rere rallied and fast, hard play found the sides very evenly matched. Hall opened the scoring for ’Kuri when he intercepted a pass and went over for a try which was not converted.
Both sides were fighting hard and the ’Kuri backs menaced the Rere goal line, compelling them to force twice. From the second drop-out, ’Kuri took the offensive and Albert ran 30 yards to score a good try. It was not converted. Fast and Open The play continued fast and open with both sides near scoring. Rere went ahead when the ball was sent to Faulkner who cut through the opposition for a try which Ward converted. Rere kept up the pressure and after a good back movement A. Fitzgerald went over for a try. Again the’ kick failed and at half-time Rere led 11-3. The second spell opened with a lot of hard rucking and the pace began to tell. Nera Nera. Falconer and Edwards toiled hard in the Rere forwards and McMeekin, Cooper and Grey for ’Kuri. McMeekin was unlucky when he kicked through and followed up to be beaten by the bounce, with an almost clear run to the line. However, he kicked a good penalty five minutes later. Rere suffered two serious losses when Pettit and Faulkner retired injured, but held off determined efforts by ’Kuri and carried play to the ’Kuri goal line where, after a line-out. the ball bounced over. Alberts got there first for Rere, bringing the score to 14-6 in favour of Rere. Mr. A Beilis was the referee.
