SPIRIT OF ANZAC PERPETUATED IN AUSTRALIAN VISIT
(S.R.) WAIROA, May IC. "The New Zealand. Anzac delegation was very successful in all its objects,” said the leader, Mr. C. V. Chamberlain, who has just returned to Wairoa. “Members of the party marched in the Anzac Day parades in the capitals of every-State of Australia and as a result of the visit there ha-s been a cementing of the ties of comradeship towards perpetuating the spirit of Anzac.” Mr. Chamberlain gave as his personal opinion that the visit had done a great deal of good, not only between the two associations, but also between the two countries. The Australian hospitality was “intense,” he said. On the other side of the Tasman the Returned Services’ League was a very strong body and was doing splendid work, particularly toward the establishment of homes for ex-servicemen.
The Anzac Day parade in Sydney was watched by 250,000 people and the New Zealanders were given pride of place in the march which took two hours to pass the saluting base. The dawn parade was particularly impressive.
The party spent 10 days in Melbourne as the guests of the Victorian Returned Services’ League, receiving welcomes from the State Cabinet, the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, and members of various municipalities, and later carried out a tour covering a considerable distance. “The Victorian people are working on a long-range policy,” said Mr. Chamberlain. “Secondary industries being established throughout the State are turning out goods of a high standard in considerable quantities.
