MEAT CONTRACT TALKS BREAK
DOWN OVER PRICE (10 a.m.) BUENOS AIRES, May 14. The Argentine-British meat talks have broken down on the question of price, it was learned from Argentine Foreign Ministry sources last night.
The Argentine Ministers of Economy and Finance were understood to have informed the Foreign Minister, Dr. Juan Bramuglia, that they could not accept Britain’s latest offer communicated to them by the Ambassador, Sir John Balfour.
The Minister of Economics, Senor Roberto Ares and Minister of Finance, Senor Gomez Morales, were understood to have stressed to Dr. Bramuglia the impossibility of accepting Britain’s “last word’’ offer of 1 peso 10 centavos per kilogram, about 15 cents per lb., at the special rate of 13.53 pesos per pound sterling used in meat transactions.
Argentine packing-houses maintain that the minimum price should be 1 peso 40 centavos per kilogram or 19 cents per lb.
The Foreign Ministry spokesman said that as commercial negotiations had now broken down the situation would be handled through diplomatic channels.
