WOMEN’S PLAY KEEN IN RUATORIA HOCKEY
(Herald Correspondent.) Interest was keen and some good play marked the opening of the Ruatoria Hockey sub-association’s competitions last week.
The most attractive game was that in which Ruatoria defeated Porourangi by three goals to one. Ruatoria fielded a number of new players and in general the positional play of their forward line was superior, T. Taana, Mrs. Goldsmith, K. Campbell and the two full-backs, Mrs. Tuhou and Mrs. Mathieson were outstanding for Ruatoria, with J. Kaua and M. McKay for Porourangi. Porourangi opened the scoring with their only goal, from a tussle around the goal, mouth. Immediately from the bully-off, M. Hogan took the ball to the circle and Mrs. Goldsmith netted. Good combined movements led to the other two goals, both of which were netted by T. Taana. Hikurangi had little trouble with United, the Misses Mary and Maria Haua and S. Keelan playing notably, and each scoring a goal. For United S. Smith, half, and Mrs. J. Pitman fullback, the latter a newcomer, were most dependable. H. Nepe scored, the final tally being 4—l in favour of Hikurangi.
In the men’s division Uepohatu were unable to field a team, giving a win to United by default. Te Aowera defeated Porouranga, 2—o.
