CHRISTIANITY IN EUROPE AIDED BY £5453 FROM N.Z.
(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 14. The National Council of Churches now holds more than £3OOO for reconstruction in Europe, nearly £SOO being raised during the tour of Dr. J. Hutchison Cockburn, who came to tell New Zealand about this department of the World Council of Churches.
After payment for the last two shipments of food for children £6OO remains when the freight charges have been met. The balance will be transferred to the reconstruction account. Funds collected in New Zealand to help Christian leadership in Europe now total £5453.
The council is negotiating with the Government for permits to send these moneys overseas.
Bishop J. K. A. Bell, of Chichester, and Mrs- Bell are to tour New Zealand in October. It is possible that the Rev. D. T. Niles, of Ceylon, chairman of the youth -committee of the World Council of Churches, will visit New Zealand in 1950.
The Rev. S. Woods, formerly of Christchurch, is to represent New Zealand at a central committee meeting of the World Council Churches in July. Representatives from the national council have been invited to attend a conference of marriage guidance in Christchurch on November 22 and 23 when it is hoped to form a Dominion marriage guidance council to coordinate the work now being done by district councils.
