RETESTING OF DRIVERS NOT NEW DEPARTURE
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 13The retesting of accident-prone motor drivers is the result of a recommendation from the New Zealand Safetv Council to the Commissioner of Transport, said a transport official commenting on the reports that the department was shortly undertaking retesting.
He added that similar tests of people who had committed offences liable to cause accidents had been carried out by inspectors in an unspectacular fashion since 1940.
The present retesting would take the form of a visit from an inspector, who would talk over the incidents with the driver who had committed offences in an endeavour to find the cause and give guidance. Following the visit the driver might be asked to undergo driving or eyesight tests, or examination by a doctor. If the tests were unsatisfactory his license would be cancelled or suspended. “We have had a staff of inspectors working in Wellington for some years, collating and analysing court returns on road-regulation breaches,” said the official. “Then, as now, the motorist who had his license cancelled or revoked had the democratic right of appeal to a magistrate.”
