Miss Bettv Quigley and Miss Marie Douglas, prior to her marriage to Mr. M. Glengarry, were the guests of honour.

The guests brought with them many useful gifts. Competitions were enjoyed. Miss Quigley wore a black wool georgette frock and Miss Douglas a cinnamon brown woollen, frock with pearl stud buttons. Miss Masters choice was a brown corduroy velvet frock, and Miss Salter’s a black frock relieved with white.

“Miscellaneous” Evening In honour of Miss Betty Quigley, Miss J. Harre invited friends to her home in Irani)! road. The guest of honour, assisted by her prospective bridesmaid, Miss Vivienne Quigley, unwrapped many varied miscellaneous gifts. A delicious supper was served. The hostess wore a biscuit coloured stud frock with a full circular skirt, and Miss Quigley a pale blue woollen frock.

5 o’clock Party Miss Ida Petersen invited friends to Mr. P. Bushnell's home in Iranui road at 5 o'clock on Saturday. Miss Betty Quigley was the chief guest. Bowls of chrysanthemums provided attractive decorations.

The hostess was wearing a dusky Dink stud frock, while the guest of honour wore a pale blue frock under a navy edge-to edge coat.

Kaiti School Presentation On Friday morning when the Kaiti School assembled. Miss Lesley Neal presented Miss Quigley with a pink spray, and Mr Palmer, the headmaster, on behalf of the Kaiti School Committee. staff and children presented her with a dinner service.

TRANSFER TO GISBORNE A combined farewell and gift evening was tendered recently to Miss L. Munro at the home of Mrs. J. G. Mottram, Opotiki, prior to the former’s departure for Gisborne, where she will teach at the Gisborne Central School. FAREWELL EVENING

A pleasant evening was spent at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. Chapman! Mangapapa road, on Sunday, when friends of Mr. and Mrs. P. C. Heath, who are leaving the district, met to bid them farewell. Mr. and Mrs. Heath, with their' daughter, left. Gisborne on Monday for Invercargill, where Mr. Heath has received a new teaching appointment.

GISBORNE AERO CLUB On Saturday evening members of the Gisborne Aero Club held a social and dance in the Waikanae Beach Kiosk. Silver streamers and bowls of autumn flowers provided the decorations. On Saturday the third meet of the season of the P.B. Hunt Club was held at Manutuke on Mr G. Brown’s property, the GO odd riders having an en joyable day's sport. Thanks and appreciation were extended to the owner of the property for having the hunt back again this year.

WAIKOHU GOLF CLUB DANCE On Saturday the Waikohu Golf Club held a dance in the Puha Hall to raise funds for a lawn mower. Miss Lena Ruru’s orchestra provided the music, and Mr. H. Lennane Dlaved the extras. The hall was decorated sVith coloured streamers and greenery. On the supper tables were low bowls .of chrysanthemums.

Women members of the club provided a delicious supper.

GISBORNE WOMEN’S CLUB HEARS TALK ON JAPAN

The reception room was beautifully decorated by the members o£ the gardening circle with autumn blooms and foliage when the Gisborne Women's Club conducted a social afternoon. The president, Mrs. E. P. Widdowson, welcomed the guests. A musical programme was much, appreciated, vocal so'os being contributed bv Mesdames A. Wood. F. E. Wallen. and Knox. A very amusing com petition followed. The guest speaker, Mr. R. White, Ngatapa, gave an interesting account of present-day Japan, touching on manv different aspects, which included climate, industrial conditions, home life, and the great change in the political side of women’s status and their positions Mr. White spoke enthusiastically of the trams and industries, and exhibited photographs. The speaker, who was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, agreed to resume his talk at the August social evening.

Mrs. M. Anderson, who has been appointed by the Hard of Hearing League as a teacher for Gisborne, gave a short, clear resume of the league’s objects.

Afternoon tea was served by committee members.

WARNEFORD SCOUTS’

DANCE The Warneford Senior Scout group held its first dance of the season on Friday night in the Scout Hall, Carnarvon street, a large number of young people attending despite the rain.

The rooms were attractively decorated with streamers, balloons, and Chinese lanterns, and a large paper chandelier in the troop colours was suspended from the ceiling. Bowls of flowers completed the decorations of the rooms, which were faced by portraits of Princess Elizabeth and King George. Chaperones were Faulkner, McKenzie and Rule. The duties of M.C. were capably carried out by the troop S.M., Mr. J. McKenzie. Music was. supplied by Mr. Colin Nunn's orchestra, and extras played by B. Hughes, D. Kohn, Q. Kemp, and D. Neil.

An elimination waltz was won by Miss A. Poole and Mr. B. Martin, and the winners of the Monte Carlo were Miss J, Crawford and Mr. B. Hillyard. Among the dancers were Misses Margaret Roberts, Paddy Parker, Betty Grey, Joy Walker, Margaret Haultain, Ann Hamilton, Lois Garbett. Evelyn Garbett, Marie Gray. Carol Hope. . The Methodist Church, Wairoa, was attractively decorated with daisy chrysanthemums on Saturday, April -0, when Patricia Rita, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Bean. Mahia Avenue, Wairoa, was married to Charles Gordon Thomas, only son of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Timms, Hastings. The officiating minister was ,the Rev. Mr. Caldwell, and Mrs. Haughton played the organ.

Escorted by her father, the bride made a pretty picture in a gown of white sheer and lace. A yoke of lace with a V-shaped neckline topped the gathered sheer bodice, and very full lace sleeves were gathered into a satin ribbon. The skirt was finished with a train and pockets of lace. A tulle veil, loaned by the bride’s sister-in-law, was held in place by a coronet of orange blossom. The bridal bouquet was of chrysanthemums and roses. The bridesmaids, Miss M. Bean, Gisborne, and Miss Judith Armstrong, Hastings, wore frocks of lemon sheer, with full skirts gathered into the fitting bodices, which were peaked back and front. Puffed sleeves were featured, and the round necklines were finished with fichus. 'The bridesmaids Carried bouquets of mauve asters and chrysanthemums. The best man was Mr. K. Le Comte, Nelson. Tlie bride's mother, wearing a wool georgette suit with a red corsage, received the guests at a reception held in the Mayfair Hall. She was assisted by tlie bridegroom’s mother, who wore a fawn suit with lemon and pink flowers.

For going away the bride chose a frock of blue pleated -wool georgette, with a grey coat and toning hat and shoes.

The future home of Mr. and' Mrs. C G- T. Timms is in Hastings.

A bride who made her vows in Holy Trinity Church on Saturday, April 23, was Marion Ruth, daughter of Mrs. Hankey and the late Mr. W ■ Hankey, Aberdeen road. The bridegroom was Jack, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Ratclifl'e, Lytton road, Gisborne, The ceremony was performed by Archdeacon Hall, and the organist was Mr. D. G. Dyer. The church was beautifully decorated with flowers in autumn tonings.

The bride, who was escorted by her brother," Mr. Brian Hankey, wore a gown of white ivory lace, with fitting bodice, and. a heart-shaped neckline. The bodice, which tapered to points back and front, was buttoned to the waist at the back. An embroidered tulle veil was secured with a spray of white flowers, and the bride wore a double string of pearls. She carried a sheaf of white chrysanthemums and dahliasThe bridal attendants were Misses Nancy Campbell, Anne Evans, and Joy Ratcliffe, who were dressed alike in white ivory lace, with fitting bodices, featuring tucked yokes and square necklines. The full skirts were topped by peplums, which fell away to a point in the front. The 'maids wore single strings of pearls, and apricot chrysanthemums and dahlias in autumn tones formed their bouquets and sprays for their hair.

Mr. Jim Ratcliffe, brother of the bridegroom, was best man. The guests were received at a reception in Low’s rooms. Mrs. Hankey was wearing a saxe blue woollen suit, with navy accessories. She carried a posy of pink rosebuds and autumn flowers. Mrs. J. Pilgrim, sister of the bridegroom, wore an autumn check costume, with flowers to tone, and black accessories.

For travelling, the bride had chosen a teal blue suit with a cream blouse and navy accessories. Mr. and Mrs, Jack Ratcliffe will make their home in Gisborne-

GOWN OF SILVER LAME : SEARANCKE-FERRIS WEDDING

Wide interest of both Maoris and Europeans attached to the wedding on Saturday of Ingrid Riria, only daughter of Mrs. Ferris, Owen road, and the late Lieutenant-Colonel Ferris, to Monty, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. S. Searancke, Waikato, and the nephew of Princess Te Puea.

The Rev. Mr. Tamata Taupo officiated at the ceremony at the Poho-o-Rawiri Church, which was decorated with white chrysanthemums and asparagus fern. On the pews tied with white bows were white chrysanthemums and pink merines. The bride, who was given away by Mr. W. Carroll, wore a gown of silver lame. A high round neckline and short sleeves were features of the fitting bodice, which buttoned down the back to the waistline. From the peplum the full skirt fell in soft folds forming -a full train at the back. The tulle veil was held in place with a plait of silver lame. She wore elbowlength mittens of silver lame and carried a bouquet of yellow roses. Maids in Pink.

Frocks of pink Swiss organdy and georgette were worn by the matron of honour, Mrs. D. Wade, and the bridesmaids, Miss D. Searancke, the bridegroom's sister, and Miss Vivienne Ferris, cousin of the bride. The frocks were designed on the same lines as the bride's, but the bodices, sleeves and peplums were of pink Swiss organdy and the skirts were of a deeper shade of pink georgette over a darker shade of taffeta. At, the back of their hair they had an arc of flowers in matching shades and they wore pink mittens and carried bouquets of yellow, pink and red roses.

The two flower girls. Miss Lyn Ferris, niece of the bride, and Miss Annetta Lardelli, cousin of the bride, wore exact replicas of the older bridesmaids’ frocks.

The bridegroom, who was a major in the Maori Battalion, was attended by Captain R. Lockett, best man, and Messrs. T. Nadin and J. Ferris, groomsmen.

The bride’s mother wore a strawberry shaded eloque dress under a grey coat, a grey hat, and matching accessories. The bridegroom's mother was wearing a black' dress under a fur coat and a black hat trimmed with black veiling. The guests included 50 relatives of the _ bridegroom from the Waikato Maniopoto tribes. Other visitors were Mr. P. Heath. South Canterbury, Mrs. Te Tau, Wellington, and guests from the East Coast.

Following the wedding ceremony, the guests were received at a reception and dance at Poho-o-Rawiri.

For travelling the bride chose a grey costume, grey hat and matching accessories. Mr, and Mrs. M. Searancke will, make their future home in Gisborne.
