UNIONS ADVOCATE MORE STATE RULE IN U.K. INDUSTRIES
(10.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 8. Further emphasis on the extension of nationalisation is contained in amendments to resolutions for consideration by Labour Party’s conference which will meet between#June 8 and 10.
The amendments propose that the Government, when it reviews and consolidates the nationalisation measures already undertaken, should consider the nationalisation of profitmaking industries to balance the losses already made by those taken over. One amendment even seeks the complete socialisation of the British economy during the life of the next Parliament. The conference will also debate a series of resolutions on Far Eastern developments.
The resolutions express concern at the Malayan situation and deprecate the “Government’s apparent indifference to the Far Eastern problem.” Three local branches show anxiety at foreign industrial competition, one calling for an early peace treaty with Japan to ease the situation. The agenda shows, however, that the main interest of party members centres on domestic policy—cost of living and the need for more houses in addition to nationalisation.
