KING'S INTEREST IN LIFE-SAVING SOCIETY
In answer to a copy of the annual report for 1947 of the New Zealand Council of the Royal Life-Saving Society forwarded to the Privy Purse Office, Buckingham Palace, several copies of a letter have been received by the deputy president of the society, Mr. Edgar H. Oxlade, from the Keeper of the Privy Purse , Buckingham Palace, and sent to each of the New Zealand branches.
“Thank you for sending me on behalf of Lord Mountbatten, who is now serving overseas, a copy of the Royal Life-Saving Society’s annual report for 1947. I duly laid this report before the King. “Among the many activities of the society during that year His Majesty was interested particularly to hear that the society had been quick to take advantage of the raising of the school-* leaving age by providing life-saving instruction for young people and so to assist the rising generation to become still more efficient in the art of savinglife from drowning. “Yet another highly commendable object of the society was the encouragement given to the interest that is being taken by the police-training centres since the King appreciates to the full that a thorough knowledge of life-saving is essential to members of the police forces.
“I am sure that all those engaged in the society’s activities will be glad to know that I am desired to convey to them an expression of His Majesty’s appreciation of their work, together with a message of good wishes for an uninterrupted continuance of these successful results. Yours sincerely, Ulick Alexander, Keeper of the Privy Purse.”
