Australia Offers To Link Defences With United States
(N.Z.P.A. —Reuter —Copyright.) (10 a.m.) CANBERRA, May. 7. Australia has offered to integrate her defences completely with those of the United States, according to the Minister of Defence, Mr. J. J. Dedman. He did not reveal whether the United States had accepted the offer Mr. Dedman’s statement is regarded as significant in view of the recent presence in America of Sir Frederick Shedden, Secretary of the Defence Department, who is considered Australia’s head man on defence organisation and international collaboration. Mr. Dedman added that if the Australian plans could be fitted in with those of America in such a way that both countries could benefit, there was not likely to be any opposition by either Government.
When the cable was referred to him last night, the acting Prime Minister, Mr. W. Nash, said: “No discussions having as - their purpose any integration of the defence of New Zealand with that of the United States have so far taken place.”
