MINISTER SAYS HIGHER PREMIUMS NOT SIGN OF MORE ACCIDENTS

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 6. Increases in premium rates did not imply an increase in accidents, said the Minister of Transport, Mr. F. Hackett, yesterday in discussing the revised schedule of premiums for third-party motor insurance.

The Minister said that the reasons for increases in certain classes were that firstly, more miles were being run and more passengers carried by the vehicles concerned, and secondly, the total of claims paid had been increased by the new levels of compensation being awarded by the courts. The premium rate for motor cycles had been increased from 16s to £l, that for trade motor trucks, etc., £1 15s to £2 ss, and for hearses and ambulances from 10s to £l. There was no alteration in respect of tractors and traction engines, business cars, fire brigades, public motor cabs and rental cars. Dealers’ rates decreased by 5s to £1 10s.
