MAORI YOUTH FINED FOR TRUCK CONVERSION

A Maori youth. John Winkleman, aged 19, labourer. Te Karaka, wanting to go to a dance at Te Karaka one night this month, took a truck from a neighbouring station and on the way home ran it into a drain.

As a result of his action he was fined *■ £5, with costs 17/-. in the Magistrate’s Court in Gisborne yesterday, when he pleaded guilty to unlawfully converting to his own use at Kanakanaia a motor-truck valued at £4OO, the Property of Kenneth Grey Read Bloomfield. Senior-Sergant G. S. Norris said that the defendant had driven about 20 miles to the dance, at which he had not stayed long. The vehicle had gone into a drain while negotiating the Kanakanaia Hill and Winkleman had left it there. The complainant had, found the truck next morning. For the defendant, Mr. M. R. Maude said he had borrowed the truck with intention of returning it. Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M., imposed the fine.
