Capital Punishment Requested By J.P.’s

(P.A.) TAURANGA, April 7. That capital punishment should be re-introduced if in the opinion of the judge trying the case the crime was of such a heinous nature as to warrant the death sentence; that a request should be forwarded to the Government to introduce the necessary legislation early in the forthcoming session of Parliament to empower it to conduct a plebiscite was the subject of a remit- passed unanimously by the annual conference of the New Zealand Justices' Association.

"There is a dangerous and mischievous body of persons in New Zealand among the 18-23 age group,” said the retiring president, Mr. A. J. Haub, commenting on the increase in crime during the past 10 years. “I am sure that every member must view with alarm the' increase in the number of assaults on children.”
