Soviet Attack “May Come This Year” -- Polish Refugees
(10 a.m.) WASHINGTON, April G. Two former Polish officials who, two months ago, fled their Soviet-dominated homeland, said today that Russia has over 300,000 troops in Poland ready for an attack on the west which “may come this year.” The two are Mr. Stanislaw Banczyk and Mr. Stanislaw Wojcik, vice-chair-man and secretary-general respectively of the Polish Peasant Party. They said that purges had been carried out in the Polish Army and Air Force, “unreliables” being replaced by Russian officers. Soviet commissars had also been brought into the army. They gave a detailed report of intensified military preparations in Poland within the last six months, including Russian war manoeuvres, the storing of medical supplies and the rebuilding of highways and barracks. The indications were, they said, that the Russians were preparing Poland as the “springboard of Soviet aggression against the west.” They said that since the spring of 1948 Soviet commissars had been telling Polish soldiers that war with the west “is necessary.”
