LOCAL BODY POLLS THROUGHOUT U.K.

LONDON, April 4.

Britain’s first general elections in local government opened today with polling for seven of county councils of England and Wales.

The week’s key contest is Thursday's Socialist-Conservative fight for the control of the London County Council. The Socialists have held a council majority for 15 years and at present occupy about five-sixths of the seats.

The largest group of 23 counties will poll on April 9 by which time 1941 vacancies will have been filled. Only half of the 20,000,000 county electors need vote because over 1900 of the local councillors have been elected without a contest.

The Socialists control a relatively small proportion of Britain’s local councils of all kinds, but they have a majority in 10 of the county councils and aiso control 22 of 28 London borough councils for which elections will be held on May 12. Between now and then there will be contests in 392 borough councils, 572 Urban district councils, 465 rural district councils and over 200 Scottish county and borough councils and 7000 parish councils.
