Pyke, had been most helpful in assisting with the conduct of the competition on the hooks, Mr. Tolerton said.

Apologising for the absence of tha chairman of directors, Mr. H. B. Williams. Mr. A. F. Salmon, on behalf of the board of directors of the company, expressed satisfaction with the interest taken by members of the farming community in the event. The carcases on the hooks were representative of tha type of stock grown in the district and were a credit to their breeders.

Over a number of years of improving their sires. Mr. Salmon said, fanners were reaping the results. As far as chilled beef was concerned, there tyas a noticeable improvement in textura and he was sure that beef from this district, in future, would compare favourably with that from the Argentine. District Takes a Step Forward

With the inclusion of Gisborne in tha district chilled beef competition for tha first time, the president of the P.B. Agricultural and Pastoral Association, Mr. P. F. Barker, considered the district had taken a great step forward in beef production. It was the second year of the chilled beef competition, but the first in which the Bay_ was to ba represented in. the London judging. Whether it was to become an estab--lished industry or not, however, seemed to depend largely on the question of the availability of shipping equipped for the trade. Mr. Barker drew attention to the fact that the Fletcher Cup had been won this year by Messrs. Williams Brothers, Muriwai. and that next year a cup was to be made available by Messrs. Thos. Borthwick and Sons (A’sia), Limited, for the competitor gaining most points on the hoof and on the hooks. He thanked the Meat Inspection Division of the Department of Agriculture for its co-operation with a display to acauaint farmers with the effects of diseases .in meat. Concluding, he expressed the thanks of the association to the management for making the competition possible and for the afternoon tea provided for tha gathering.
