REP. RUGBY ESSENTIAL
While the breaking into club football *by representative fixtures was deplored, Poverty Bay was in the position of having to take representative fixtures when they were available, said the new president of the union, Mr. M. H. Beuth, when this was discussed at the annual meeting qf the P.B. Rugby Union last night. “We cannot have club and representative football—you cannot have it both ways,” he added. Mr- Beuth- said he could remember that when club football was solely concentrated on many years ago it had sunk to a low standard. Today. Rugby in Gisborne had grown up, ahd "the union could ill afford to neglect representative fixtures.
Mr. Beuth said that difficulty in obtaining games had been experienced due. perhaps, to the geographical situation. "I don’t think for one moment that we should return to wholly club football and lose our identity in the representative field,” he added. "I believe that we should have more representative games, both here and away.”
