TONGAN AND ELLICE ISLANDER CHARGED JOINTLY WITH MURDER

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 6 Jointly charged with the murder of Alice Mcah at Port Adelaide, Australia, on December 8. Solomone Lui Pope, a Tongan, aged 24, ship's quartermaster, and Telupe Ramucra, an Ellice Islander, aged 30. ship’s donkeyman, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yes. terday afternoon.

On the application of the police the accused were remanded until Friday. Replying to the magistrate, both accused said that they understood what was said about them when the charge was read.

The accused had been arrested earlier- in the day by Detective B. Harvey, of Adelaide, on the ship Lautoka which arrived in Wellington from Adelaide on Sunday. Detective Harvey, who flew to New Zealand, had been engaged in inquiries since the arrival of the Lautoka.
