CATHOLIC SISTERS TO STAFF HOSPITAL AT THE CHATHAMS
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 5. Three sisters of the Catholic order of missionary sisters of the Society of Mary are coining to New Zealand from Australia to take over and staff the Government hospital at the Chathams. One of them, Sister Mary Kieran, originally of Wanganui, reached Wellington by the Monowai. The others are coming via Auckland and all are due to leave for the Chathams on April 14. "All these sisters ask of life is to serve," said the Minister of Health, Miss Mabel Howard, today. “It is the same order as that which conducts the hospital at the leper colony." ‘‘The sisters of the order are excellent nurses," added the Minister, "and hardships do not seem to matter to them. I hope this will be the solution of our Chatham Islands difficulties.” The Minister said that owing to the isolation and bad weather experienced at the Chathams there had been difficulty for 20 years in keeping staff there. While the sisters would staff the hospital both with nurses and domestics, the administration would remain under the North Canterbury Hospital Board, said the Minister.
