£SOOO In Jewels Thrown Out With Rubbish

SYDNEY. Police recently made an unsuccessful search in a municipal rubbish dump for jewels valued at £SOOO. They acted as a result of a report by a manufacturer living in the suburbs that he had placed refuse in the incinerator of the flats in which he lived. Two days later he realised that hsc had included with the refuse five diamond rings and a diamond tie-pin valued at £SOOO. The contents of the incinerator had meanwhile been removed to the dump. The manufacturer, who assisted in the search, admitted, as he surveyed the tons of rubbish, that there seemed to be no prospect of recovering the jewels. He suggested that the loss was “compensation” for his previous good luck, and said that he would have to recoup the money by hard work or by winning a lottery.—Reuter.
