Primate Of Poland Slates Press For Attacks On Pope
(N.Z.P.A. —Renter—Copyright.)
(11 a.m.) LONDON. April 5Archbishop Stefan Wyszynski, Roman Catholic Primate of Poland, has severely condemned Poland's pro-Government press for “insulting and abusing” Pope Pius.
The Associated Press correspondent in Warsaw says that an an unannounced sermon celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the Pope's priesthood the Primate warned Catholics of the slanders hurled against His Holiness. The Primate particularly singled out the Warsaw newspapers which frequently attacked the Vatican. The Archbishop said the Pope's “dignity is abused and many lies are told about him.”
He added that Government journals have a free rein to attack the Pox but the Catholic journals were rigidly censored. “There are concentration camps again,” he said. “The prisons are full and the bricks of ruined churches are used to enlarge the prisons. Many priests are in gaol.”
