TILERS CONSIDER PERFORMANCE OF DISPUTED WORK

(P.A.) AUCKLAND. April 5. One hundred and fifty tilers who were dismissed three Weeks ago by their employers for refusing to fix battens may start work again this week. The position - is to be considered at a special meeting of the Tilers and Slaters’ Union tonight. The union will discuss a proposal from the Labour Department that normal work, including the fixing of battens, be resumed pending an application to the Court of Arbitration by the .department for a ruling as to whether the fixing of battens is the responsibility of tilers or carpenters.

Tilers have been anxious to -resume work, but the deregistered Carpenters’ Union has insisted that tilers have no right to fix battens. The new Carpenters’ Union organisation has indicated that it will not object to this work being done by tilers. Meanwhile, in conciliation council discussions today for a new award for tilers and slaters a proposal was put forward by the union that provision be 'made for battening to be performed by its members in line with the Canterbury award. This was supported by a request from the -employers for a clause covering the fixing of tile and slate battens.
