Little Tax Relief Likely In Budget

(10 a.m.) LONDON, April 4. There is no certainty that the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Stafford Cripps, will come bearing gifts in the shape of taxation reliefs in his Budget speech on Wednesday, says the Times Parliamentary correspondent. The indications are that, with expenditure on defence and social services increasing, the load the tax-payers are carrying cannot be lightened very much although further incentives may be necessary. Sir Stafford Cripps has to measure all the financial proposals by the contributions they are likely to make towards Britain’s general economic strategy. Sir Stafford Cripps, with an eye on making Britain independent by the time Marshall Aid ends in 1952, has set Britain Herculean tasks and he is notoriously hesitant about permitting relaxations by the way. He, on the other hand, can scarcely ignore the psychological vale of some budgetary incentives to the taxpayers after a year of great effort.
