Steep Rise In Cost Of Houses During Past Year

According' (o figures suppied by potential home-builders to the Gisborne Borough Council when applying for permits to build their houses, the cost of erecting dwellings in Gisborne has risen steeply during the past year.

During the year ended March 31, 1948. 36 permits for the erection of dwellings were issued by the council. The total cost of these dwellings was £124.138, giving an average cost per house of £1443 10s.

For the year ended last Thursday 96 permits were issued, the total cost being £163,493. This gives the present average cost of dwellings as being £1703. an increase of £2GO 10s, over the 12 months.

In all, 284 permits were issued by the Gisborne Borough Council last year for new dwellings and additions and alterations to dwellings and other buildings. The total cost of this work was £215,446. No big new buildings were erected the largest alteration job was at Chelsea Hospital. During the previous year 296 permits were issued by the council, the total value being £215,797. Last month 38 permits were issued, 11 of these being for new dwellings. The total value of the permits was £24,796, of which £20,097 was accounted for by new houses.
