First Refusal In 36 Years By Nelson Watersiders

(P.A.)

NELSON, Mar. 28.

For the first time since the general strike in 1913 Nelson watersiders this morning declined to answer the call for labour. Union officials would give no reason for the stoppage, either to the Waterfront Commission or the Nelson Harbour Board officials or the press. They also refused to say whether work would be resumed tomorrow.

Extensive enquiries failed to uncover any local dispute and it is believed that the stoppage is related to the unexplained strike at the West Coast ports about 10 days ago. The harbour authorities had no warning of the strike and even rank-and-file members of the union learned of the executive’s plans only this morning. Five ships are in port awaiting labour. They are the Waipahi, Matangi, Kaitoa, Portland and Talisman. The union agreed to load a quantity of perishable outward cargo in the ferry steamer Matangi this afternoon.
