FIGHT POSTPONEMENT EXPLAINED BY DOWNES TO MAGISTRATE
(P.A) PALMERSTON N., Mar. 29. An explanation of the 14-day postponement of the fight for the New Zealand light-heavy-weight boxing title between Tommy Downes, Palmerston North, and Darcy Hoffman, Dunedin, was forthcoming in the Magistrate’s Cpurt yesterday when Downes, the winner of the title, was charged with fighting in a public place on February 1-6. Downes exhibited a bitten thumb to the magistrate and claimed that he had suffered it in a fight outside a dance hall and” said this had been responsible for the postponement. He pleaded not guilty, but was convicted and fined £2 with costs. The magistrate, Mr. Herd, said he was unable to determine who caused the fight, but he had no hesitation in entering a conviction. He said he had no power to suppress Downes’ name as requested by counsel because of previous convictions against him.
