Vandalism At Wharves: Launch Set Adrift
“Every week-end there is vandalism on the wharves and this is proving a very serious matter to those people who have property in this vicinity,” said Mr. I- J. Quigley at yesterday’s meeting of the Gisborne Harbour Board.
During the last two week-ends his firm had found that the lines of a launch belonging to them had been let go. Last week-end the launch had been found in the harbour basin, and had the wind been the other way the vessel probably would have been blown to sea.and lost, said Mr. Quigley. The damage appeared to have been done mainly by youths, who used the vessels to swim from. The board should ask for more cooperation from the police, said Mr. T. A. N- Corson. The vandalism was carried out on the wharves and right along the Waimata River. He thought that more police protection was warranted.
“It is everybody’s duty to report vandalism and a private citizen has the right to even arrest a rftan if it is necessary,” said Mr. C. Mills. The secretary to the board was instructed to write to the Gisborne police asking for more supervision around the wharves .
