“Australia Not Pulling Weight In Exports To Britain,” R. G. Casey
SYDNEY, Mar. 8.
The export figures showed that Australia was not pulling her weight in helping to feed Britain, said Mr. R. G. Casey, Federal president of the liberal Party. He added that the average volume of Australian exports of major primary products to Britain in the past three years had been less than 10 years ago. “There seems to be no end to the Ingenious methods by which the Minister of Commerce, Mr. Pollard, seeks to persuade Australians that all is well with our primary industries and our ability to meet export responsibilities and possibilities,” he saidHe asked why it was that while according to statistics New Zealand's exports to the United Kingdom went from £46,300,000 in 1938 to £90,000,000 in 1947 and Canada’s from £79,200,000 to £230,400,000. Australian exports had only increased from £72,000,000 to £97,200,000 in the same period.
