PEACE IN CHINA NOW QUESTION OF SAVING FACE

(N.Z.P.A.— Reuter —Copyright.)

(XI a.m.) NANKING. Mar. 5. Fighting laid, night between the advancing Communists and Nationalists holding ttvo bridgeheads on the north bank of the Yangtse River, east of Nanking, is reported today from Cliinkiang.

More than 1000 Communists are said to have been engaged in a three-hour battle. -

In the capital, practically everyone is convinced that the civil war is over and that peace is now mainly a question of finding the right face-saving formula.

No one doubts that the ultimate agreement will be victory for the Communists and most recognise that the extent to which the Nationalist formula now being worked out by the newly-ap-pointed 10-man committee eventually dovetails with the Communists’ eight points will determine the extent _to which all China becomes Communistcontrolled. Whatever the agreement finally reached it is expected to be acceptalbe to most of Nationalist China.
