HYBRID MAIZE SEED PRODUCTION IN MANUTUKE
Standing back from the main south road on the Gisborne side of Manutuke is a particularly fine looking stand of maize—a block of 25 acres. This block of maize is being grown under the supervision of the Fields Division of (he Department of Agriculture and it is expected that it will provide the Dominion requirements of Ffister 3(>o hybrid seed for the next planting season.
Apart from the buffer rows skirting the block, it has been planted out in four rows of the female foundation single hybrid to one of male. The stage reached now is that all female tassels have been removed for the males to fertilise the silks of the female foundation. In this excellent maizegrowing season the stalks average a good nine feet. In separate blocks in other parts of Manutuke there are the male and female foundation parents. What is being clone there is the production of the single hybrids, similar to those in use in the 25-acre block, from self materials. Next year Ihe seed from those two areas should be available lor the final crossing.
