Mr. and Mrs. Newton, Christchurch, who have been the guests of Mrs. I. Bonifant, returned home today. Mrs. E. B. Walker, Auckland, is the guest of Mrs. G. V. Smith, Heta street. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Monckton, Patutahi, have left for a visit to Feilding for the Savile Cup polo tournament. Misses Betty Hills and Mary Trafford, Cook Hospital, are spending the weekend at the former's home in Ngatapa. Miss Merle Badman, Auckland, is visiting Miss Nancy Hills, Ngatapa. Mr. and Mrs. V. W. Stubbing.?, de Lautour road, have left for Hastings, where they will attend the Scott-Den-holm wedding. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Scott, Wellington, are spending a holiday in Gisborne. One of Wellington’s foremost women in civic affairs, Mrs. Knox Gilmer, is to take a well-earned rest from her many duties. She will leave shortly for a six months’ visit to Britain, accompanied by her daughter, Miss Jean Gilmer. ENGAGEMENTS Wilcox-Taylor. —An engagement is announced between Leslie Ray, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Wilcox, Tukura road, and Joan Catherine, only daughter of Mr. A. Taylor and the late Mrs. Taylor, Beach road.

Johnston-Ferris. —Mr. and Mrs. H. Te K. Ferris, Wainui Beach, Gisborne, announce the engagement of their eldest daughter, Apikara Sigrid Kamau, to Edward Horton, only son of Mr. J. E. and the late Mrs. L. Johnston, Christchurch. SYDNEY VISITOR

Miss Mary Peach, formerly of Gisborne but who has been in Sydney for the past 20 years,.is visiting New Zealand for six months. She has been staying with her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. J. Peach, Score road, and is now the guest of Mrs. Sutherland and Miss Watt, Gladstone road. On Thursday Mrs. Sutherland and Miss Watt entertained a number of friends to renew their acquaintanceship with Miss Peach, who is leaving shortly to visit other friends in the south. Miss Peach will return to Sydney in May. TWENTY-FIRST BIRTHDAY

A special occasion for Miss Thelma Thomas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Thomas, was her twenty-first birthday celebration last Saturday evening, when many of her friends were invited to the Oddfellows’ Hall, Mangapapa, Wearing a satin striped ninon dress fashioned slightly off the shoulder, with a frill finishing the neckline, with a fitting bodice and a full skirt and at the waist a cyclamen spray. Miss Thelma Thomas greeted her guests assisted by her mother, who wore a turquoise satin-backed crepe dress with a contrasting Burgundy spray of carnations. The guests enjoyed dancing to Mrs. W. Thomson’s music, with Mr. Wright as M.C. Items during the evening included songs by Miss Audrey Flockart, Miss Doreen Bacon, and Mr. Wright. A delicious supper was served and the cake cut. On the stage were many presents the guest of honour had received from her friends. Mr. Wright proposed a toast to the birthday celebrant, who made an apt reply and proposed a toast to her parents. Her father replied and presented his daughter with the traditional key. The hall was decorated with festoons of balloons and gay streamers. The stage was banked with bowls of many coloured asters.

“JAYCETTES” ENTERTAIN The Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Gisborne Junior Chamber of Commerce left no stone unturned to ensure the success of their first major social engagement, which was held recently at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Bodle, Wainui Beach, when they entertained members and friends. Favoured with fine weather, this outdoor party was an unqualified success. The members of the committee responsible for the function were Mesdames Beaumont. Bodle, Ralph Hall, Crafts, Spence,' Lovelock, Searle, McCallum, Proctor, and Frith. The novel and picturesque decorations included coloured lamps hung in festoon style in and among the trees, the work of Mr, R. E. Searle. Community singing, dancing on the lawn, and games were enjoyed. Competition winners were Mesdames Lovelock. Attwood and Marsh, and Messrs. Searle, Attwood and Lovelock. A buffet supper was served inside the house.

Amongst the large gathering were Mesdames Beaumont, King, Searle, March, Lovelock, Frith, Rivers, John McCallum, Andrews, Dyer, Crafts, Davies. Valentine, Emmerson, Spence. John Hall, Ralph Hall, Bolton, Attwood and Adeane: Misses Kerr, Shearer and Christiansen, Palmerston North; Messrs. Spence, John Hall, Ralph Hall, Bolton, Attwood, Cranswick, Smith, Adeane, Crafts, Andrews, Dyer, Davies, Emmerson, Vallentine, McCallum (3), Stevens, Frith, Lovelock, Searle, King, Bodle, Crafts, March and Rivers. Musical items were contributed by Mrs. Bolton and Messrs. Valentine, Dyer,‘Cranswick and Spence.

FIVE O’CLOCK PARTY Mrs. J. C. N. Thomas recently invited a few friends to her home in Owen road at 5 o'clock. Cocktails were served informally on the verandah and in the garden. INFORMAL EVENING On Tuesday evening Miss W. Lysnar invited a few friends to her home, •‘Kelvin," Stout street, for an informal evening. Miss Tui Shcrson. Auckland. Miss Lysnar’s god-daughter, who was the guest of honour, wore a blue and white striped silk frock, while the hostess chose a multi-coloured floral dress.

Dancing was enjoyed by all. Miss Lena Ruru provided the music. A delicious supper was served informally. GISBORNE REBEKAH LODGE Presided over by the noble grand, Sister R. Hollis, the fortnightly meeting of the Gisborine Rebekah Lodge, held on Thursday, was largely attended. A vote of condolence with the family of the late Mr. J. Morton was honoured in silence. A visitor from the Hastings lodge was welcomed. Two new members were elected, and will be initiated next lodge night. Two other new members were initiated on the previous lodge night. Nominations of officers for the next term were closed, and the election of officers will take place next lodge night. The drama circle is being revived and plays selected. The Grand Lodge representative is to be asked to press, at the Grand Lodge session, opening on March 15 in Helensville,_ this district's claim for a lady district deputy grand master. An enjoyable hour of games and competitions followed, Mr. Frazer's team being the winners. Supper was served by the social committee. TENNIS DANCE

After the exhibition tennis by the visiting Australians, Messrs. O. W. Sidwell, J. Matthews, D. Rocavert, and R. McCarthy, the P.8.-E.C. Lawn Tennis Association held a dance in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Mangapapa, to entertain the visitors.

Miss Lena Ruru’s orchestra provided the music. The hall was decorated with gaily coloured streamers. Prominent Gisborne tennis players seen dancing were Mrs. B. Jenkinson. who wore a floral silk dress with a black background; Mrs. E. R. Brown, wearing a teal moire-watered taffeta evening dress; Mrs. W. I. Bruce, a powder blue cnifl'on dress: Miss M. Haisman, a pink taffeta skirt with a black velvet top; Mrs. E. Stevenson, a floral silk evening dress; Mrs. B. King, a black skirt with a fitting green velvet top. Mrs. D, Richardson, wife of the president of the P.8.-E.C. L.T.A., was wearing a white hailstone muslin evening dress with an off-the-shoulder neckline.

EXHIBITION TENNIS Many interested spectators from the town and surrounding country districts watched the exhibition tennis by visiting Australians and local players this week at the Kaiti tennis courts.

Mrs. E. R. Brown wore a navy and white patterned silk frock. Mrs. B. Jenkinson was wearing a pastel lime green suede Royal dress, while Mrs. Brian King wore a green and while striped dress, and Mrs, E. Stevenson chose a blue and white striped linen suit.

RECENT WEDDING WILLSON-SCRAGG

A beautiful gown of magnolia satin was worn by Roma Florence Mary, elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. Scragg, Gisborne, for her marriage on February 12 to Lawrence Thomas Reginald, third son of Mr. H. E. Willson and the late Mrs. li. E. Willson, Waikohu, Gisborne. The ceremony took place at St. Andrew’s Church, the Rev. J. Kingsley Fairbairn officiating. The bride was escorted by her father. The bride’s gown was fashioned with sleeves pointed over the wrist, rounded neckline and lace yoke with a fitted bodice from which fell a gracefully gathered skirt and full train. Tier uncut tulle veil was held in place with a coronet of orange blossoms. She wore a triple string of pearls and matching ear-rings, and carried a trailing bouquet of cream gladioli and roses. Gowns of apricot lace were worn by the bridesmaids, Miss Eileen Scragg, chief, sister of the bride, and Miss Lorna Holmberg. Worn over matching material, they were designed with heart-shaped necklines, fitting bodices and full skirts with a bustle effect. They also wore triple strings of pearls and lace mittens. Their sheaths of mauve gladioli and asters matched thenhead sprays. , , , , . The bridegroom was attended by his brother, Mr. Bernard Willson, as best man, and Mr. Bill Rickard as groomsman. _ , _. The reception was at Low s. The guests were received by the bride s mother, who wore a fuchsia crepe frock with black accessories and spray of cream roses. She was assisted by the bridegroom's aunt, who had chosen a deep wine frock with black accessories an da spray of pale yelowrolses. For travelling the bride wore a blue model frock with white accessories. _ Mr. and Mrs. Willson will make thenhome in Gisborne.
