Fine Wools Firm At Dunedin: Other Sorts Irregular

<P.A.) DUNEDIN, Feb. 22. Although the demand for the best classes of fine wools was good throughout, other classes met with erratic bidding at the second fleece sale of the 3.948-49 season in Dunedin yesterday. ■The maximum catalogue of more than 30,000 bales, all new season’s greasy wool, was offered to a full bench of buyers. Medium and strong halfbreds were irregular, with prices lower than at the. first fleece sale of the season in Dunedin in December. 'lt was noticeable during the sale that buyers who had shown spirited competition at the previous auction were almost’ entirely out of the market- Any lots they bought were mainly lower priced sorts. Local Mills Get Choice Lines

Local mills were keen buyers of choice lines and secured most of the hjgh-priced wool. Early in the catalogue it was evident that better classes would bring good values, with other descriptions meeting with a dragging sale. There was a keen demand for fine pieces, necks and bellies, these meeting with spirited bidding. ■ Fine crossbred wools had fair inquiry. Crossbred was about on a par with the Christchurch sale in spite of the fact that Otago crossbred is acknowledged to be superior to that grown in the north. Generally* prices were firm on the Christchurch sale, especially for fine wools, but bidding •was extremely slow. Continent and Russia Inactive Continental buyers were not as active as at the December sale. No wool was bought on behalf of Russia. The official report states: “A full . bench of buyers attended when the catalogues of the various brokers were in the same quantities as in December. “Compared with the recent Christchurch sale, prices for Merinos and - fine halfbreds suitable for local mill requirements were firmer. Medium and strong halfbreds were slightly easier. Medium and fine crossbreds, while firm on Christchurch rates, were distinctly lower than the exceptional December sale in Dunedin. This is undoubtedly due to lack of orders from the Continent and Russia. .*■ “Generally, competition was erratic and well spread, but Bradford showed increased interest. The Continent was keen on skirtings and these were sold at satisfactory prices. The sale finished at 11 p.m. The official range of prices is:— Merino, 60/64’s.—Extra super, 70$d to 78|d: good to super, 60d to 64d; good, 52d to 58d.
